Bouvier Mailing Lists

A short introduction to Internet Mailing Lists.

What is a mailing list? It works like this. An interested party sends a subscription request to a mailing list program or a list administrator who adds the person's e-mail address to a subscriber list. When a person posts a message to the mailing list, that post is distributed to each and every subscriber.

Lists can be moderated or unmoderated. When a message is sent to a moderated list, the message must first be approved by a list administrator before it is distributed to all subscribers. The purpose of moderation is to keep messages on-topic and to prevent inflammatory statements. Messages sent to an unmoderated list are distributed to all subscribers without approval.

Lists may be open or closed. Anyone can subscribe to an open list by sending the appropriate subscription request to the mailing list program. A closed list requires that the list administator add subscribers.

Many mailing lists offer a digest option. Normally, each and every message sent to the list results in an immediate distribution to all the subscribers. A person with a digest subscription will only receive one or two messages a day and those messages contain many individual messages appended together.

To my knowledge, there are four major Bouvier mailing lists available.
